Why Is This AI Cycle Different From Past Concentration Periods Like the Dot-Com Bubble?

Every major market cycle invites comparisons to the past.

Lately, one of the most common questions I've been asked is whether today's AI-driven market resembles the dot-com bubble of the late 1990s.

There are certain similarities, but there are also some important differences.

In this edition of Capital Compass & Key LIVE, I discuss why today's market deserves to be evaluated on its own merits and why understanding concentration risk is just as important as understanding growth.

One of the biggest differences between the two periods is earnings.

During much of the dot-com era, many companies carried enormous valuations despite producing little or no profit. Today's largest AI-driven companies are generating significant earnings, particularly in areas like semiconductors and infrastructure that support the continued growth of artificial intelligence.

That doesn't mean the risks have disappeared.

History tells us that periods of extraordinary growth eventually slow. Companies rarely sustain exceptional growth indefinitely, and investors should recognize that today's market leaders won't always grow at the pace they are today.

This conversation explores:

  • How today's AI market compares to the dot-com era
  • Why corporate earnings matter when evaluating market cycles
  • Understanding concentration risk in the Magnificent Seven
  • Why extraordinary growth eventually slows
  • Balancing long-term opportunity with prudent diversification

One of the challenges of investing is separating excitement from discipline.

It's possible to believe in the long-term future of artificial intelligence while also recognizing the importance of diversification and thoughtful portfolio construction.

The goal isn't to predict exactly when leadership will change.

The goal is to understand the risks you're taking, evaluate them thoughtfully, and build a portfolio that aligns with your long-term objectives.

Capital Compass & Key LIVE is a series where I share perspectives on investing, tax strategy, and long-term wealth planning, drawing on decades of experience working with business owners, families, and advisors.
